The mechanical rebar splice was developed actively in Japan and Europe in the early 1970s. The U.S. also had developed different types of splicing methods but some products below quality and constructability standards have disappeared from the market. In Korea, many different types of splicing methods have been developed and used since 1995.
The mechanical rebar splice has been rapidly used in many construction sites due to its convenience of constructability, quality consistency and various applications. In particular, this method is emerging as an essential requirement for a structure expansion and anti-seismic design.
The mechanical splice shows its area of application differently depending on the joint performance. The product showing excellence in joint performance can be used regardless of the splicing position of a structure.
Rebar splice methods which are frequently used in Korea include ‘the threaded rebar splice by normal temperature swaging’ and ‘the taper jack splice method’
