Mechanical Rebar Splice

Mechanical rebar splicing advanced rapidly in Japan and Europe during the early 1970s. While various joining methods emerged in the United States, sub-standard options were phased out over time. In South Korea, diverse splicing methods have been developed and adapted since 1995.

Adoption of mechanical rebar splicing has grown rapidly on job sites due to enhanced constructability, uniform quality, and broad applicability. It has become an essential requirement for large-scale construction and seismic-resistant design.

Mechanical splices vary in their applicable locations depending on their joint performance — the better a product’s joint performance, the more widely it can be used regardless of the splice location within the structure.

Rebar splice methods commonly used in Korea include the cold-swaged threaded splice and the taper jack splice method.
